Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) plays an important role in the functions of the immune system as well as well as its better known role in calcium balance (1). Its influence is on macrophages, and reduction of inflamed tissues. Shortages of Vitamin D inhibit immune system activity. Megadoses do not improve the immune system activity in people with a healthy immune system. So Vitamin D is involved in immune system regulation and helps the immune system of people with Vitamin D deficiency.
