Antioxidants help protect cells from the harmful aging
effects of Free Radicals. Rusted metal, faded paint, an apple that has turned
brownare all examples of the natural phenomenon of oxidation. Sunlight,
radiation, toxic substances, and exposure to oxygen in the air naturally create
free radicals that cause this oxidation. Every day oxidation takes place
in your body, forming these free radicals.
Once
formed and when excessive, free radicals can create imbalances that lead
to oxidative stress, disturbances in cellular function, and damage
to DNA. We recognize these disturbances when we have inflammatory
responses that lead to pain. Researchers believe that free radicals contribute
to heart and vascular disease, immune disorders, cellular aging, cancers, and
many other diseases. Fortunately, just as nature gives us these free-roaming
radicals, it has also provided us with a way to cope. We call these coping
mechanisms antioxidants.
Antioxidants are protective agents, found throughout nature
and in the body, that help manage the effects of free radicals. They work by
donating an electron to a rampaging free radical and transforming it into a
non-threatening compound. Antioxidant nutrients help to protect cellular
structure and support healthy cellular function and tissues. Antioxidants also
promote the overall health of the body, including the immune system,
cardiovascular system, circulatory system and healthy vitamin and mineral
levels.
Sources of Antioxidants
Oligomeric
Proanthocyanidins (OPCs) found in Pine Bark and Grape Seed Extracts
Oligomeric
Proanthocyanidins (OPCs) found in Pine Bark and Grape Seed Extracts, is a
phytochemical famous for its powerful antioxidant capabilities. Studies suggest
that OPCs may be as much as fifty times more potent than vitamin E and twenty
times more potent than vitamin C in terms of antioxidant activity. OPCs promote
healthy brain, liver, spinal nerves and connective tissue function. OPCs promote
a healthy cardiovascular system by supporting normal blood flow. OPCs support
blood vessel walls by promoting proper nutrient and oxygen delivery to cells,
tissues and organs. This nourishment supports the circulatory system, capillary
walls, veins and promotes overall healthy circulatory function. OPCs provide
important support for healthy cell membranes of the skin. OPCs also support
cellular health throughout the body, joint and muscle health, and brain health.
The human body cannot produce OPCs; so you must obtain them from the food
you eat or through supplementation.
Super
Fruits.
In an article by Paul M Gross (2007), he makes a
quantitative and qualitative assessment of nutrients and antioxidant strength.
He compares six of the trendy superfruits, acai, goji, mangosteen, noni,
pomegranate, and seaberry. On Grosss scale of 1 10 (10 being the highest)
based on ORAC and phenolic concentration, Acai ranked eight (8). On the same
scale mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana L.) ranked lowest at one (1) for nutrients
and antioxidant strength. Noni fruit (Morinda citrifolia L.) ranked two (2) for
nutrients and one (1) for antioxidants strength. Gross recognizes acai as an
exceptional source of polyunsaturated fats (particularly oleic fatty acids) and
dietary fiber. In addition, he reported the concentration of vitamin E, calcium,
copper, potassium, magnesium and niacin in acai are among the highest for plant
foods. Gross ended evaluation by noting that: "As measured by ORAC and
phenolic concentration, antioxidant strength for the aa is the highest
known, exceeding the next closest food by three-fold." Acai became the
superfruit of choice.
On
the cutting edge,
Studies indicate the essential
fatty acid complex of the Aa berry
resembles that of olive oil, and may contribute to the maintenance of ideal
heart health found in Mediterranean populations.
Studies indicate that antioxidants extracted from Bilberry may promote
healthy eye function.
Austrian
endocrinologist Dr. Sepp Porta tested the influence of Elderberries in
promoting healthy stress levels. Dr. Porta found that a 10-day concentrated dose
of elderberries was effective in helping the body deal with stress.
We
know of many other nutrients that have antioxidant properties and increased
immune system support which include anthocyanins,
omega fatty acids, flavonoids, ellagic acid, tannins, vitamin C, vitamin A,
vitamin E, and lactoferrin, a beneficial milk protein.
